10/23/09 Foley Beats Lakes 13-10 in OT
Bishop Foley traveled to WaterfordLakes on Friday afternoon for their final football game of the year. With a 10-0 deficit in the 4th quarter things looked dim for Foley. As it turned out that was just the playing condition, as Foley would let off some offensive fireworks to brighten the moods of the large Foley fan base at the game.
With just under 9:00 minutes left Brad Schalk found David Leffler on a crossing pattern, and Lefty would do the rest. With the help of a couple of great down field blocks, Leffler would find some day light in the Lakes secondary and run for a 48yrd score. A Matt Morrow extra point would cut the Lake's lead to 10-7.
Then it was Foley's defense's turn to step into the spot light. They were up to the task, forcing a 3 and out. Logan Nabozny was huge all night for the defense, coming up with 12 tackles and 3 sacks. Patrick Mullen would also spend most of the night in the Lakes back field with 6 tackles and a sack. Leffler was big on D as well, with 9 tackles and pick. Isaac Latif seemed to be around the ball all night on D, ending with 8 tackles. Seniors Jimmy Moffitt and Mihir Patel played very well in their final game with 6 tackles and a pick respectfully.
Foley regained the ball near midfield looking for another score. The offense would be carried by the strong throwing of Junior Quarterback Brad Schalk. He would complete a couple of big passes to his favorite receivers, Jeff Schalk and Daniel Zuckowski, getting Foley into FG range. Senior Kicker Matt Morrow would then line up a 32yd FG and split the uprights to tie the score at 10.
As time ended in regulation the score would stay 10-10. Foley received the ball first in OT but could not punch it in for a touchdown and with 4th coming up turned to Matt Morrow for a 37yrd FG. Once again the Senior Kicker came through with a beautiful kick, that would have been good from 50.
As Lakes took over for their turn in OT, the pressure was back on the Foley D. After 3 tough plays Lakes had moved the ball to the 2 yard line for the forth down play to decide the game. Lakes lined up for a FG, appearing to settle for a tie. The play was a fake, but Foley was not fooled. Isaac Latif stood up the runner outside the goal line and Daniel Zukowski finished him off to preserve the win.
The Ventures improved to 4-5 on the year winning their final two games. For the Foley seniors, #1 Matt Morrow, #3 Mike Rossman, #4 David Leffler, #6 Pat Mullen, #7 Isaac Latic, #11 Jimmy Moffitt, #21 Mihir Patel, #40 Anthony Talampas, #56 Logan Nabozny, #65 Michael Willie, #74 Chris Uebbing, and #84 Matt Sheehan, we say thank you for the great work this year.
The seniors leave with a story book ending to their career that reads, ‘... they walked away into the darkness with their heads held high after another great Venture victory.‘
